Dairy Discovery - Take a deeper look at our organic dairy program with one of our educators. Learn about cattle husbandry, health and production, and get a behind-the-scenes look at how Wolfe’s Neck Center manages our dairy herd. We’ll even make some of our own butter!

Maine EcosystemsFall in the Forest - Join a Wolfe’s Neck Center educator as we explore our forest and connected ecosystems as the summer heat cools and the autumn weather takes hold. We’ll talk about how our habitats change with the season, and how our trees start to show their true colors!

Pumpkin Science - Hop aboard our hay wagon as we enjoy fall on the farm. Students will visit our pumpkin patch and explore the life cycle of plants including seed structure, germination, and pollination. Students will also choose their very own mini pumpkin to bring home ($4 extra per student). This field trip is offered in October only.

Regenerative Agriculture

Greenhouse and High Tunnel Growing: Explore our heated, and unheated, four-season high tunnel growing facilities and learn how we use these tools to extend our growing seasons and grow food year-round. Students will take soil temperature measurements as well as compare indoor and outdoor crops.

Pasture Raised Hens: We keep around 200 laying hens that move rotationally throughout our various pastures to benefit our soil while laying healthy eggs. Students will get up close with production poultry, while learning about the benefits of natural soil amendments and pasture management.

Busting Cow Burps: Wolfes Neck Center is involved in a multi-year experiment to find how we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cows. We’ll learn about cow digestion, and how local seaweed can actually help cool our climate.

Composting & Manure: Composting and manure operations are a huge part of what we do here at the farm. All manure on the property is either applied directly to the fields as fertilizer or is added to our compost to improve our soil. We will use thermometers to check the temperature of our compost beds (multiple beds across the property) as well as compare the health of our soil.

Pastures, carbon, and cooling our planet: Our herd of pasture- raised dairy cows not only make high quality milk – they also help our pastures draw down carbon from our atmosphere. We’ll head out onto real pastures to focus on carbon sequestration and the pasture as an ecosystem while taking measurements that farmers take every day.

Sustainable Dairy and Cheese Making (15 students or less): Students will head into our commercial kitchen and learn about the science of making cheese. While our cheese rests after cooking, we’ll visit our dairy barn and pastures to learn how this delicious favorite food can be made sustainable with our grass-based pasture systems.

Local Ecosystems

Marshes and Saltwater Estuary - Classes will take a short hike with our naturalists to reach our salt marsh and estuary. We'll talk about how these unique ecosystems protect Maine's shoreline, help filter out pollutants, and store carbon.

Coastal Ecology and Invasive Green Crabs - Wolfe's Neck Center rests upon miles of Casco Bay's tidal landscape. We'll learn about how this unique ecosystem is affected by the tides and the invasive green crabs.

Community Science & Project ASCO - Students will join our education team in the Schoodic Institute's Project ASCO study. This study of Maine's native rockweed involves taking weights, measurements, and observations of our rocky shores to understand how warming waters are affecting our shorelines.

Forest Ecology - Our staff will lead your students on an exploration of Wolfe's Neck's new growth forests. We'll talk about trees, local plants, invasive species, and how salamanders act as an idicator species for our forest's health.
